Should I Use Conditioner?

There's a lot of controversy over the use of hair conditioners. Some people swear by them and others avoid it like the plague. Let's do a quick rundown of the points.

Can I apply it to my roots?

The simple answer is yes and no. In the winter if your hair is drying out it is good to nourish the follicles by using a deep conditioner applied directly to the scalp. This should eliminate the flaking and leave your hair soft and shiny. Just don’t do it too often - once a month should do the trick. Outside of a harsh winter, no its not advisable to condition the roots. Your scalp is producing natural oils and your roots don’t need any extra. Best practice is to condition the tips and work backwards to the middle of your strands.

What type of conditioner should I use?

It's true that the same conditioner won’t work for everyone. The general rule of thumb is if you have thin or oily hair you should stay clear of humidifying or deep conditioners that weigh your hair down. If you have thick or dry hair you can afford to use a richer formula. Common Ground’s organic shampoo and conditioner set is a great all-rounder. The shampoo doesn’t stip your strands but still gives a good clean. The conditioner is light so it doesn’t weigh down your hair. Their plant-based non-toxic formulas are safe for everyday use.

What if I have colored or permed hair?

Then conditioning is important to keep your hair sealed and prolong the treatment. It's also a good idea to use a deep conditioner every couple of weeks to protect the cuticles.

Can I skip the shampoo and just condition?

Yes, and it's actually best not to shampoo everyday as it can dry out your ends and create frizz. Rather than not washing your hair at all, you can bypass the shampoo and grab the conditioner.

Why do some people condition before they shampoo?

It does sound counterintuitive, but it makes plenty of sense. Oil based styling products can build up in your hair. A conditioner can emulsify these oils and prep your hair for shampooing. Believe it or not, conditioners can also help remove oil based under-arm deodorants through the same process before applying body wash. Who would have known?
